How to Program the Keyless Remote to the '97 C/K1500

by Leonardo R. Grabkowski

The Chevrolet C/K1500 refers to a series of pickup trucks that were eventually renamed the Silverado. The C1500 is the two-wheel-drive version of the truck, and the K1500 is the four-wheel-drive version. If you've lost your truck's keyless entry remotes, or if you bought the truck used and it didn't come with remotes, you can program the keyless entry at home. The remote you use must be from a 1997 C/K1500 truck. To ensure that the remote is compatible, buy it from a Chevrolet dealer.

Step 1

Find the C/K1500's diagnostic port under the steering wheel. The port is on the left side of the dash beneath the steering wheel, and it has 16 small holes.

Step 2

Count to the fourth hole, starting from the left of the top row. Insert one side of your jumper wire firmly into the hole.

Step 3

Insert the other end of the jumper wire into the eighth hole on the top row. This is the last hole on the right. Your truck's door locks will go through the lock/unlock cycle.

Step 4

Press and hold the "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons on the remote at the same time. Continue holding the buttons until the door locks go through their cycle again. This should take 15 to 20 seconds.

Step 5

Press and hold the same buttons on a different remote if you are programming more than one. Take the jumper wire out of the diagnostic port when you are finished.
