How to Remove a Headrest from Vehicles

Turn the engine off and engage the parking brake for safety. Make sure you are parked in a safe area, away from traffic.

Adjust the headrest to the highest position to access the locking nut. Use the Allen wrench to turn the nut counter-clockwise until the clip becomes visible.

Remove the clip, and the headrest will slide freely from the seat. Repeat the procedure for each headrest you wish to remove.

Fixed Headrest

Release the back of the seat, and fold the seat forward so you can reach the bottom of the back support.

Remove the seat cover. If your cover is leather or cloth, you will find snaps or a zipper at the bottom of the back-support portion of the seat. Undo the fastener, and slide the cover off. If you have a carpeted board backing your seat, press along the edges of the board to pop it out of the retaining clips, and remove the board.

Cut the fixed headrest off the frame of the seat body, using a reciprocating saw.

Adjustable Headrest with Button Release

Reach under the headrest, and depress the release button. The button will be on the base of one of the support posts for the headrest. Hold the button in, and pull the headrest up as far as it can go.

Insert a small nail into the hole on the side of the plastic base of the support post (which side it will be on varies by S-10 model year).

Press the nail into the hole. This will release the internal stop clip, and then you can remove the headrest completely.

Adjustable Headrest (No Release Button)

Release the back of the seat, and fold the seat forward so you can reach the bottom of the back support.

Remove the seat cover. If your cover is leather or cloth, you will find snaps or a zipper at the bottom of the back-support portion of the seat. Undo the fastener, and slide the cover off. If you have a carpeted board backing your seat, press along the edges of the board to pop it out of the retaining clips, and remove the board.

Reach up inside the frame of the seat, and depress the retaining clip holding the headrest in the seat. Pull the headrest out of the frame.

 How to Remove the Headrest from a Ford F-150

Slide your fingers between the head rest and the seatback. The headrest has two mounting studs that protrude downward from it into the top of the seatback. Where the studs enter the seat back you will find two circular plastic bezels. One bezel is perfectly circular, the other has a small headrest adjustment button located on the side.

Push the headrest adjustment button inward, toward the head rest mounting stud, with your thumb, placing your fingers on the opposite side of the stud to gain leverage.

Lift upward on the headrest with your other hand by inserting that hand, palm up, underneath the center portion of the headrest. Continue to keep the headrest adjustment button depressed until you have raised the headrest all the way up and out of the seatback.

Reinstall the headrest simply by pushing the headrest adjustment button in, lining the headrest mounting studs up with the holes in the top of the seatback, and sliding the headrest downward until it clicks into place. Adjust as necessary.

Kneel on the seat, facing the head rest.

Raise the headrest up as far as you can.

Press the button on the side of the housing that the head rest support bar slides into; pull the head rest completely out of the seat.

 How to Remove the Headrest From a Dodge Caravan Seat

Place the Dodge Caravan in "Park." Locate the headrest you'd like to remove.

Lift the headrest with your hand to the highest position. The headrest will stop once the lock engages at the highest point.

Depress the locking button, located on the bottom of the headrest, where the headrest supports meet the top of the seat. While continuing to hold the locking button, pull the headrest out of the seat body. The headrest is now removed.

 How to Remove a Headrest in a Mercedes Benz

Sit in the back seat of the vehicle, facing the front seat, and press the electric switch on the front seat to raise the headrest to its highest setting. Set the front seat in a completely upright position.

Push the headrest release button, located under the upholstery on the back of the front seat about 11 inches below the left headrest pole. If you do not feel a release button, skip to Step 4. Some newer models do not feature a headrest release button and require a different method of removal.

Push the headrest release button and slowly pull the headrest out of place until it is removed.

Enter the front seat, facing the seat-back.

Place both hands on the two headrest bars. Move them back and forth as you pull them up, which will release the headrest latch. Remove the headrest from the seat.

 How to Remove the Headrest on a CTS

Sit in the seat you want to remove the headrests from and turn yourself around so that you're facing the back of the seat and can clearly see the headrest. Grab the sides of the headrest with your hands and lift it up vertically, exposing the plastic covers at the top of the seat and at the bottom of the headrest rails.

Locate the small hole in the plastic covers, one on each side. Place the #00 Phillips-head screwdriver into the hole and push firmly. This will release the lock on that post on the headrest. Lift it slightly with one hand so it doesn't fall back in the slot.

Repeat step 2 for the other side of the headrest, then grab both sides with your hands and lift it up and out of the slots on the back of the seat.

 How to Remove the Headrest on a Buick

Slide the headrest to the top position.

Place the headrest removal tool flat against one of the two headrest posts, and slide the tool down into the top of the seat.

Push down on the removal tool to unlock the post.

Repeat the steps above for the other post, and then lift the headrest out of the seat.
