How to Turn Off a Honda Check Engine Light
by Alibaster SmithThe check engine light in a Honda indicates that service is needed on the vehicle. Unfortunately, once the service is completed, the light doesn't go out on its own. You will need to use a special tool available from Honda, called a diagnostic reset tool, to reset the electronic control unit in your Honda. Honda's on-board diagnostic, or OBD, control modules can be reset from the fuse panel, once you have this tool.
Step 1
Open the fuse panel by pulling down on it. Some Hondas use a lock knob that must be turned counterclockwise before pulling down on the panel cover. Other Hondas use retainers on either side of the fuse cover that must be pushed together before pulling down on the cover.
Step 2
Plug the pinned connector into the fuse panel input for the diagnostic reset tool. There is only one input slot that will fit the reset tool plug.
Step 3
Turn the ignition key to the "II" position and wait for the light to stop flashing on the reset tool. This will reset the electronic control unit, or ECU, and turn the check engine light off.
Tips
- For specific information about your Honda's check engine light and diagnostic codes, consult the vehicle's manual.
