How to Reset the Computer on a 1997 BMW 528i

by Alibaster Smith

The computer on your 1997 BMW 528i generates and stores trouble codes related to your vehicle's emissions control system. Since the emissions system can affect overall engine performance, you need to check and fix whatever is wrong with the vehicle. BMW uses a large rectangular port and a special tool only available from BMW to reset the computer. The tool actively jumps the terminals in the port to clear the trouble codes and reset the computer.

Step 1

Open the fuse panel in your 528i by pulling down on the fuse panel cover in the driver's side foot well with your fingers.

Step 2

Locate the large, round, open OBD port on the main fuse panel.

Step 3

Plug the OBD plug from the reset tool into the open port on the fuse panel.

Step 4

Turn the ignition to the on position but don't crank the engine.

Step 5

Wait for the reset tool to reset the BMW's computer. When this is finished, the "service engine" light on your dash will blink and then shut off.
