The check engine light on a Ford F-250 comes on when your truck needs regular maintenance or when there is a problem with the truck. The on-board diagnostic computer, or OBD computer, throws an error code that is stored in the computer which triggers the check engine light to come on. After you have fixed the problem or completed maintenance, you must use an OBD reset tool to reset the check engine light.

Step 1

Open the fuse panel underneath the steering column assembly.

Step 2

Locate the input for the OBD tool plug. There is only one port large enough to accommodate the OBD tool plug.

Step 3

Plug the OBD tool into the port on the fuse panel.

Step 4

Turn the OBD tool on, using the power switch on the tool.

Step 5

Turn the ignition key to the "II" position and wait for the check engine light to go off. This will reset the error codes and the light.
