The 1998 Chevrolet Lumina has an oil life monitor that lets the driver know when to change the oil and filter. The oil light comes on indicating "CHG OIL SOON" when the monitor has determined it is time for the oil change. This usually takes place between 3,000 and 7,500 miles since the last oil change. If a GM mechanic changes the oil in the Lumina, he will reset the oil light. If you change the oil and filter yourself, you can manually reset the oil light system.

Step 1

Turn the ignition key to the "Run" position with the engine off.

Step 2

Press the accelerator pedal fully to the floor three times within five seconds. The "CHG OIL SOON" light flashes, indicating the oil life system is resetting.

Step 3

Turn the key to the "Off" position when the oil light stops flashing.

Step 4

Turn the engine on. Check the display to ensure the oil light has reset. Repeat the procedure if the oil light is still on.
