Mazda uses chip technology in its ignition keys that enables the car’s computer system to recognize the ignition key to start the vehicle. When a key is inserted into the ignition that is not recognized by the computer, the ignition system will be disabled, and the car will not start. To add a key to your Mazda, you need to use two fully programmed keys to access the programming mode. If you do not have two currently programmed keys, you will need to contact your Mazda dealer for programming.

Step 1

Insert one of the programmed keys into the ignition. Turn the ignition to the “ON” position for at least one second then turn the key to the “OFF” position.

Step 2

Remove the key and immediately insert the second programmed key into the ignition. Turn the ignition key to “ON.” After one second, turn it to “OFF.”

Step 3

Remove the key and quickly insert the key you want to program. Turn the ignition to the “ON” position with the un-programmed key. Watch for the red key symbol on your dashboard to illuminate then disappear within one minute to confirm the programming.
