How to Waterproof a Convertible Top
by J. JohnsonOwning and driving a convertible can be a lot of fun. You can get the feel for the open road with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face. However, when you plan to put your convertible top up, such as when the forecast calls for rain, you need to make sure you're well prepared. This involves learning how to waterproof your convertible top. Doing so will protect the inside of your vehicle, as well as you and your passengers, from moisture in the event of rain or snow.
Step 1
Create a schedule for waterproofing your convertible top. If you store your vehicle in a garage, you should waterproof the top about twice a year. Otherwise, you should waterproof it three or four times a year.
Step 2
Check to make sure the entire convertible top is dry before waterproofing.
Step 3
Find a high quality product to waterproof your convertible top. The product you choose should not contain petroleum distillates, plasticizers, silicone or organic solvents -- all of which can damage your convertible top. Make sure the product you choose includes a waterproofing ingredient.
Step 4
Spray the entire convertible top with a thin layer of the waterproofing product. Apply two or three layers to the seams of the convertible top as they are most vulnerable to moisture and therefore damage. The product will need time to soak in.
Step 5
Park your convertible in the sun and let the waterproofing product dry. This will take less than an hour, especially if it's sunny and warm.
Tips
- Put your convertible top in the sun before you begin to waterproof it. This will speed up the drying process.
