How to Reset the Convertible Top on a Mercedes SL500
by Melissa KingThe Mercedes-Benz SL500, part of the SL-Class of roadsters, is a two-door car classified as a luxury grand tourer. The SL500 comes with a variety of features, such as a retractable hardtop. This hardtop is operated by pulling up on a switch to open it, or pressing the switch down to close it. If you cannot get the hardtop to work, and the switch indicator light is flashing, it may be jammed. A jammed hardtop can be fixed by following a reset procedure.
Step 1
Close the trunk lid and the luggage cover inside the trunk. If either of these are open, the retractable hardtop cannot operate. Once the lid and cover are shut, the hardtop switch may be used.
Step 2
Start the vehicle's engine, and let the car run while you open or close the hardtop. The hardtop does not operate if the car's battery voltage is too low.
Step 3
Wait 10 minutes before trying to operate the hardtop again. If you attempt to open or shut the hardtop five times in a row while the indicator light on the switch is flashing, the hardtop shuts town temporarily as a security measure.
