How to Replace Rear Speakers in a 2000 VW Bug

by Russell Wood

The stock rear speakers in a 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle (also known as a "Bug") are hidden behind the rear side panels, on either end of the seats. Over time, the rear speakers can blow or break from age, and they can lose sound quality in the process. Replacing the stock speakers with new ones not only fixes the sound problem, but also adds a selling feature for when it comes time to sell the car.

Step 1

Open both doors. Slide the front seats forward as much as possible, and tilt the tops of the seats forward so you can access the back seat. Pop the trunk and push the buttons in the top of the rear seat back. Push the seat back forward.

Step 2

Crawl into the back seating area. Hold the side panel with both hands. Lift it up then forward using a little bit of force to remove the rear panel. Repeat this on the other side.

Step 3

Unscrew the rear speakers from the car using the torx-head driver set. Pull the speaker out and unplug the harness on the back of the speaker using your hands. Plug the wiring for the Volkswagen speaker harness into the back of the replacement speaker and then plug the harness into the stock harness. Screw the speakers into the rear mounts using the torx-head drivers.

Step 4

Clip the rear panel back in place in the reverse order of disassembly. Fold up the rear seats and position the front seats where you want them.
