PT Cruiser Airbag Removal

by Carl Pruit

Removing the airbag from the PT Cruiser is a job that can be completed in about a half hour. The PT Cruiser has an electrical wiring connection for the airbag that runs through the steering column to the fuse box. There are a few triggers or electrical wires and fuses to unplug in order to remove the airbag, but it can be done without too much trouble. You can remove the airbag from the PT Cruiser yourself, saving you time and money.

Step 1

Unfasten the negative battery cable of the PT Cruiser from the battery post with an open-end wrench. Let the vehicle sit for a half hour to allow the airbag to discharge before attempting to remove it from the vehicle.

Step 2

Locate the fuse box underneath the dashboard between the steering wheel and the drivers' side door. Find the fuse for the airbag by checking the lid of the fuse box for the location and remove the airbag fuse with a fuse puller.

Step 3

Find the steering wheel column cover underneath the steering-wheel column and remove the cover with a screwdriver, setting it out of the way. Look for the yellow, plastic wiring connector on the inside of the steering column and unplug the connector by hand.

Step 4

Unfasten the four Torx screws on the back of the steering wheel with a Torx screwdriver. Lift the steering-wheel cover off by hand just far enough to locate the electrical wiring connectors behind the cover that are attached to the steering-wheel column.

Step 5

Disconnect the electrical wiring connectors on the back of the steering-wheel cover from the steering column and remove the steering wheel cover with the airbag from the PT Cruiser.
