The Ford Focus uses two sets of instructions for programming the car's computer to obey remote controls' signals, depending on the car's model year. If you don't know the model year of your Focus, look at the tenth digit of the vehicle identification number (VIN) in the lower-right corner of the windshield. If it's a Y, then the model year is 2000. If it's 1 through 9, the model year is 2001 through 2009, respectively. The letter A signifies the 2010 model year, and subsequent years will be marked by B, C, D and so on.

2000 Through 2006

Step 1

Turn the ignition from "Off" to "Run" four times in six seconds.

Step 2

Turn the ignition to "Off." The car will chime to confirm that you've done everything correctly so far.

Step 3

Press any key on the first remote you're programming. Perform this within 20 seconds of Step 2. The car will chime to confirm programming.

Step 4

Repeat Step 3 with each additional remote.

2007 Through 2010

Step 1

Turn the ignition from "Off" to "Run" eight times in 10 seconds. The locks will cycle to confirm that you've entered programming mode.

Step 2

Press any key on the first remote you're programming. Perform this within 20 seconds of Step 1. The door locks will cycle to confirm programming.

Step 3

Repeat Step 2 with each additional remote, within 20 seconds of the prior programming. The locks will cycle after each successful programming.

Step 4

Turn the key to the "Off" position to exit the programming mode.
