How to Open a Tailgate on a Xuv Envoy

The GMC Envoy XUV is a five-passenger sport utility vehicle manufactured by General Motors. The Envoy is similar to the Chevy Avalanche and the Trailblazer, but it has a unique feature: The tailgate opens in two different directions. It can be lifted down as a standard pickup truck, or it can be side swinging, like a car door. Opening the tailgate on your GMC Envoy XUV is a simple process that does not require any special skills.

Step 1

Press the button to lower the rear window a bit. This helps prevent weatherstripping problems while opening and closing the tailgate. The window button is located on the inside door panel of the driver's side.

Step 2

Decide which way you'd like to open the tailgate. If you are carrying heavy furniture, it might be a good idea to let the tailgate down as you would with a pickup truck. This will help avoid the tailgate door coming into contact with heavy articles that might damage it.

Step 3

Pull up on the tailgate door handle located in the center of the tailgate and gently lift the tailgate down. To close, gently but firmly lift the tailgate back up, and press hard to seal the tailgate. You will hear a loud click that tells you the tailgate is closed.

Step 4

If you're carrying lighter items or household goods, you may find it more convenient to use the tailgate door's side-swinging option. To open your GMC Envoy XUV tailgate as you would a passenger door, simply use the door handle located on the driver's side of the tailgate.

Step 5

Open the door as you would a car door, but be careful when first operating the tailgate door, as it is longer than a regular door. To close, simply push the door firmly until you hear it shut.
