How to Remove the Dome Light Cover in Vehicles

by Contributing WriterUpdated June 12, 2017

Removing the lens from the room light or dome light in your Vehicles is the first step in changing the bulb in the light assembly. The lens is a clear plastic lens that snaps in place over the light bulb inside the assembly. The light can be set to come on with the opening of the doors or turned off with a switch on the light. If you are removing the bulb as well as the lens, set the switch on the light to off so the bulb does not heat up while you are entering the car to remove the lens.

Shift the Camry's transmission into park and rotate the ignition to the "OFF" position. Apply the parking brake.

Insert the tip of a small flat-head screwdriver between the dome light cover and the dome light housing.

Pry the dome light cover away from the dome light housing until it separates and pops loose.

Locate the switch on the dome light assembly; it is marked "On -- OFF -- Door." Directly opposite the switch is a slot in the dome light lens, between the lens and the trim.

Insert a small flat screwdriver into the slot between the lens and the trim and apply pressure, prying in on the lens. Carefully pry the lens down as you pry in to release the tab on the lens.

Pull the lens down on the side you loosened, then pull the two tabs along the opposite edge out of the trim or light assembly. Set the lens aside for now.

How to Remove the Dome Light Cover in a Tacoma

Lift the hood on the Tacoma. Loosen the bolt that secures the negative battery cable’s terminal to the battery, using a socket wrench. Lift the terminal off the battery post. Place a shop rag around the terminal and lay the cable down along the side of the battery.

Open the driver’s door, sit down and observe the dome light cover before you attempt to remove it. The plastic trim around the cover contains a screw that sits beneath the cover. You have to remove the lens itself in order to replace the bulb, not the trim around it. The cover has two little tabs on the left and right side of it, closest to the switch. The bottom of the cover--across from the switch--has two little notches on it that fit into two slots on the trim around the cover.

Insert the tip of the 9/64-inch flat-head screwdriver into the small crack between the dome light lens cover and the trim on the left side of the switch. Pry downward on the lens cover until its corner pops out of place. Repeat the process on the right side of the dome light switch.

Grasp the side of the cover that you have popped out of place, using your hand. Lower the cover a quarter inch and then pull it toward the switch to disengage the two notches at the bottom of the cover.
