How to Change the Headlights on Saturn Cars

The Saturn car series automobile was designed with safety and reliability in mind. One of the features of this car is easy access to the headlights for replacement. This task should only take a few minutes to complete, and you will have full visibility of the road ahead. The Saturn car uses a double filament bulb that is designed with the dim and the bright Saturn car installed. This saves time and money, when replacing the headlight, as it is in one self-contained unit.

Open the hood and remove the power connector from the back of the headlight ballast.

Turn the headlight counterclockwise and pull it out of the housing assembly.

Align the tabs of the new headlight with the notches cut into the headlight housing. Push the headlight into the housing and turn it clockwise to lock the headlight into the housing.

Reconnect the power connector to the ballast.

How to Change a Headlight on a Saturn Ion

Release the hood latch and open the hood to the Saturn Ion.

Locate the two L-shaped retaining pins at the top of the headlight assembly. Turn the tops of the pins to release them from the plastic locks and lift them upward, one at a time. This will unlock the headlight assembly.

Gently pull the headlight assembly forward, being careful not to scratch the paint on the bumper.

Unplug the wire plugged into the back of the burned-out light bulb.

Turn the light bulb retainer ring a quarter-turn counterclockwise to unlock the old light bulb. Insert the new bulb into the front of the retainer ring and place it into the headlight assembly hole. Turn the ring a quarter-turn clockwise to lock into place.

Plug the wire back into the light bulb. This would be a good time to turn the key on and turn on the headlights to make sure the bulb is working properly.

Reinsert the headlight assembly into the cavity and replace the retaining pins to lock the assembly into place. Turn the heads of the pins to re-lock them in the plastic locks.

Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Locate the headlight assembly along the front corners. There will be a wiring harness connected to a socket.

Twist the socket counterclockwise and pull it out with your fingers. The headlight will be attached to the end of the socket.

Locate and lift the tab on the plastic end of the light bulb housing. Pull the wiring harness away from the socket.

Insert the wiring harness into the plastic end of the new light bulb. The harness will click into place.

Screw the headlight into the lens assembly. Twist it clockwise until it locks into place.

Turn the headlights on to ensure they work properly. Switch to the bright beams to ensure they are functioning correctly.

 How to Replace a Headlight on a Saturn Vue

Locate the side-marker light assembly retaining bolt at the top corner of the assembly. Remove the bolt with a ratchet and a socket. Wiggle the side-marker assembly away from the Vue until the assembly is removed from its cavity. Turn the side-marker light socket and wire harness connection a quarter turn counterclockwise to remove the bulb from the assembly. Remove the assembly and store it in a safe location where it will not get dropped or scratched.

Return to the headlight assembly and remove the assembly retaining bolts with a ratchet and a socket.

Insert the straightedge screwdriver into the small opening at the top of the headlight assembly. Be sure the screwdriver fits (if it doesn't, use a smaller one). Place the screwdriver through the opening and then into the headlight assembly retaining bracket.

Push the locking tab of the headlight assembly retaining bracket towards the engine compartment to unlock it. Lift the headlight assembly retaining bracket up and remove the headlight assembly from its cavity.

Remove the wire harness connection from the back of the headlight. Use the screwdriver to lift the locking tabs on the socket connection, if necessary. Turn the socket counterclockwise a quarter turn to remove it from the headlight assembly. Remove the old headlight.

Wear a latex glove on one or both of your hands to handle the new bulb. Oil on our skin will compromise or damage the glass bulb of halogen headlights in contacted. Insert the headlight by reversing the procedure. Test the headlight assembly in the cavity after the bulb and wire harness are installed, but before locking the headlight assembly retaining bracket.

Shut the lights off if the bulb is working properly and then continue reversing the procedure to replace the headlight and side-marker light assemblies.
