How to Clean the Inside of a Headlight Assembly
by Alibaster SmithOver time, your headlight assembly might become dirty. Dust and other small debris--and even moisture--can make their way into the headlight assembly, decreasing illumination from the headlights. Cleaning the inside of the headlight assembly is a cheap alternative to replacing the entire assembly. If enough dirt or moisture builds up inside the headlight assembly, it could cause permanent damage to the assembly, so checking and cleaning it regularly should be a part of your regular vehicle maintenance.
Step 1
Open the hood of your vehicle and unscrew the screws that hold the headlight assembly in place. These are normally located on the backside of the headlight assembly.
Step 2
Slide the headlight assembly forward.
Step 3
Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the headlight ballast.
Step 4
Grab the bulb at the backside of the housing and turn it counterclockwise and pull it straight out of the housing to remove it. Do not touch the glass bulb with your fingers.
Step 5
Remove the headlight assembly.
Step 6
Pry the retaining clips off of the headlight lens that secure the lens to the main housing.
Step 7
Pull the lens off the main housing.
Step 8
Spray the glass cleaner on the inside of the lens and main housing and wipe the assembly down with paper towels.
Step 9
Put the assembly back together and reinstall the assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal.
