How to Get Rid of Bedbugs in a Car

by Randall Shatto

Bedbugs are a nocturnal insect that feeds on warm-blooded creatures such as humans and pets. They infest carpets and upholstery and hide in whatever cracks or small areas they can during the day. They come out at night and engorge themselves on what blood they can before retreating back to their hiding places. Bedbugs can infest any area that has carpet or upholstery, including your vehicle.

Remove and wash seat covers or rugs in your vehicle and throw them in the dryer on high for about an hour. The washing machine and heat from the dryer will kill any bed bugs and eggs that might have been attached to them.

Clean out the car. Clean out all debris from the floorboards and under the seats. This will aid you in the process if getting rid of the bedbugs.

Vacuum all of the seats and floors in your vehicle. This will suck up any bed bugs or eggs that have attached themselves to your carpet or seats. Bedbugs like to live in the seams of the upholstery, so pay special attention to these areas.

Steam clean all of the afflicted areas in your vehicle. This should remove any of the bed bugs that cleaning or vacuuming missed. The hot steam will help kill off the remainder of the bugs.

Wrap your car seats in plastic. This will help keep your car seats clear of bugs and will smother the ones that were left on them.

Apply some Diatomaceous earth to all of the cracks and seams in the upholstery and carpet that bed bugs may hide. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural rock talcum powder that will not harm humans or pets. It is, however, deadly to bedbugs. The Diatomaceous Earth can be purchased at many online retail stores. The Dirtworks website sells Diatomaceous Earth in the form of flour right on their website at a reasonable price.

Repeat the above steps as needed. If the above steps do not work, call a professional to remove the infestation.
