How to Check Air Pressure in a Tire in a Toyota Highlander

by eHow Cars Editor

The Toyota Highlander is a crossover SUV that was introduced as a 2001 Toyota model. If you own a Highlander, you likely use your crossover SUV for hauling your family, work items and sometimes even furniture. Your tires can take quite a beating. Ensuring your tires are filled to the proper pressure ensures you get the handling you want and the gas mileage you need.

Purchase a tire pressure gauge. These can be found in any auto parts store and most department stores. Get one that features a display that is easy for you to read.

Find the recommended pressure range on the inside driver's door of your Highlander. Toyota recommends a pressure of at least 26 psi and no more than 36 psi for your crossover SUV.

Cool your tires down overnight. Driving around just heats up the air inside your tires. This will give you a slightly incorrect reading. Unless it's an emergency, just wait until first thing in the morning or after a few hours of cooling your Highlander tires before checking your tire pressure.

Remove the caps from your tires' valve stems.

Press the air pressure gauge onto the valve stems. You'll have to do this hard enough and at the right angle to completely attach the gauge to your tire. It's easy to tell if you're doing it wrong, as you'll hear a faint hissing sound that means air is escaping from the tire.

Read the value of your Highlander's tire pressure by removing the gauge from the stem valve and looking at the results. Repeat these steps for all four tires and the spare.

Tip

  • check A 2008 Toyota Highlander Standard comes with tires rated at P245/65R17 105S. The "P," for example, means that the tire is usually intended for passenger use. The "245" is the width of the tire in millimeters. The "105S" means that each tire will be able to support 2,039 lbs. When you observe these weight distribution limits, you reduce the risk of abusing your tires, causing them to deflate or even leading them to fail completely.
