How to Change an Elantra Fog Light

by Dustin Pitan

Changing the fog light in a Hyundai Elantra can be a difficult and frustrating task, but if you follow these steps, you should be able to do it on your own. If you have changed the fog lights in other vehicles, this should be less difficult for you.

You will need to get under the car and behind the front bumper in order to properly change the fog light, so there needs to be ample room to maneuver while you're under there. If you use a car jack to raise the vehicle, make sure your adhere to all safety instructions. Car-service ramps are also an option for raising the front end.

Use the Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the two fasteners holding the inner fender in the area where you will be working. Loosening the fender will give you more hand room as you proceed and make the whole process a lot easier.

Locate and unscrew the plastic cap on the back side of the fog light enclosure. It is located behind the front bumper and is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. It may be tight and could require considerable force to unscrew--especially if the light has never been changed before. You may have to use pliers or a wrench to loosen it. Be careful: don't strip the threads. Once loose, the cap will only unscrew about 1/4 of a turn. That's all you need to disengage it from the assembly.

Undo the spring wire clip that holds the bulb in place. Once you have the cap off the assembly, the clip will be visible. Pay careful attention to how it is attached so you can fit it back together later. To remove the clip, clasp it tight (being careful not to destroy or damage it), and it should undo itself..

Pull the bulb out of the assembly, making sure not to kink or damage the wires holding it in place. Witness how the wires are connected--they are usually fastened to the base of the bulb, with a connection that can't be undone. You should see a tab-style terminal at the other end. This opposite end is where you have to disconnect the wires.

Use a needle-nose pliers to disconnect the tab-style end of the wires from the terminal, and remove the bulb completely from the assembly. Until you remove the bulb, it may be impossible to know which style bulb was used on your Elantra. Usually, an H3 bulb is needed, but there are exceptions. The replacement bulb must be the same style as the bulb you just removed, with the wires attached to the base.

Use the needlenose pliers to place the tab-style connection of the replacement bulb back onto the electrical terminal.

Notice the notches in the flange of the new bulb. There are a number of them. The widest notch goes toward the top (pointing at the hood of the car). This will enable the bulb to fit securely into the assembly and allow the spring clip to do its job.

Slide the bulb back into its housing, then replace the spring clip. This will hold the bulb in place.

Replace the plastic cap on the backside of the fog light enclosure, then refasten the inner fender

Lower the car from the jack and test the fog lights to make sure they work.

Warning

  • close You are adjusting aspects of the electrical system of the car. To ensure safety, turn the car off and remove the keys from the ignition. The use of rubber-gripped needlenose pliers is recommended to prevent shocks. Also, use caution if you jack up the car. It must be secure and stable before you slide under the vehicle.
