How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in a Dodge Durango

Set the parking brake and remove the keys from the ignition. Double check to make sure you've turned the headlights completely off.

Open the hood by pulling up on the interior hood release located under the left side of the instrument panel. Then, exit the SUV and push the safety latch located on the front of the Dodge Durango between the grille openings left of the center to the right to open the hood.

Locate the three bolts that hold the headlight assembly in place. There are two on the bottom of the assembly and one on top that attaches to the inner fender panel.

Shine a light between the bottom of the headlight and bumper and between the headlight and fender and you should be able to see all three bolts. You can access the top nut by removing the fender panel access door located in the wheel liner. Use a socket wrench with a ratchet extender to remove the bolts and then put them in a safe place.

Pull the headlight out firmly to release it from the fender. Be careful not to scratch the paint of your Dodge Durango or alter the aim of the headlamps. Remove the lock ring with a counterclockwise quarter-turn.

Remove the bulb connector by pulling and releasing the red tab on the connector. Loosen the connector by pressing down on the black or green release located above the red tab.

Disconnect the bulb from the assembly by pulling it straight out. Install the replacement headlight bulb into the headlight assembly.

Replace the remaining components of the headlight assembly back into the SUV in the reverse order of removal. Fasten the bolts tightly before closing the hood. Turn your Dodge Durango on and verify your headlights are working properly.

Locate the two large 7/16 screws on the top of the headlight assembly. Use a screwdriver to remove them. Put the screws in your pocket or another safe place, so you don't lose them.

Pull the headlight assembly out and away from the front of the vehicle. You may need to pull a little harder at the bottom of the assembly to get it to come out completely.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the lamp assembly. The low beam is located closest to the turn signal and the high beam is the farthest away. Rotate the old bulb counterclockwise and pull out to remove it from the lamp assembly.

Install a replacement bulb with a clockwise turn and slight push in to the bulb socket. Reconnect the electrical connector once you've seated the new bulb correctly.

Remove the first two bolts from the headlight assembly using a socket wrench. These two bolts will be on the inside near the grille.

Remove the third bolt located on the outside bottom of the headlight assembly near the fender. You may find it easier to access this bolt from the fender well where you'll find an access hole after removing the fender plug. Use a socket wrench with a ratchet extender for easier removal.

Twist the collar on the headlight bulb a quarter-turn to remove it from the bulb base.
