How to Stop Corrosion on Boltsby C.L. Rease
Water intrusion and contact between dissimilar metals will cause corrosion to form on both the threads and the heads of bolts. To prevent corrosion on the bolts, you need to protect the their surfaces against both of the listed causes of corrosion. This includes coating both the threads of the bolt with a compound that seals the contact points of the bolt's threads and coating the head of the bolt with an agent that does not allow water to contact the head's bare metal surface.
Remove large debris from threads of the bolt with the clean rag. You do not have to be concerned with removing the oily residue covering the threads.
Open the can of anti-seize compound and remove excess sealant from the applicator brush.
Run the applicator brush around the threads of the bolt to apply a thick coat of anti-seize compound to the threads.
Thread the bolt into the part by hand.
Select a socket from the socket set that matched the size of the bolt head and attach the socket to the 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
Place the socket on the head of the bolt and turn the ratchet handle to tighten the bolt into the threaded part.
Shake the can of corrosion protection compound for the time specified by the directions on the back of the can.
Wipe the area around the bolt head with a clean rag to remove debris and excess anti-seize compound from the area.
Spray a liberal amount of corrosion protection compound to the bolt head and the area surrounding the bolt.
Allow the compound to set before using the bolted part.
