The fuel filter on the Mazda Millenia model cars requires a completely different replacement process than most Mazda vehicles. The fuel filter is a canister-type filter that cleanses the gas before it makes it to the engine. When the gas enters into the inlet side of the fuel filter, the fibers on the inside filter trap and hold any small particles and small trash. Once the clean gas makes it way through the fuel filter, it travels to the engine. Most fuel filters need to be replaced between 20,000 and 50,000 miles.

Step 1

Park the Mazda Millenia on a level surface in a well-ventilated area.

Step 2

Unscrew the fuel cap from the fuel tank. This will remove pressure from the fuel filter.

Step 3

Open the trunk and pull the carpet cover back away from the rear of the trunk. Then pull the spare tire out and set it outside of the Mazda Millenia.

Step 4

Locate the metal cover that is in the very rear of the trunk. This cover has three nuts holding it in place. Remove the three nuts with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and the 10 mm socket. Pull the cover out and place it outside of the trunk. You can now access the fuel filter.

Step 5

Position the small fluid catch pan as close to the underside of the fuel filter as possible. Remove both rubber fuel lines from the fuel filter by grasping the end of the fuel lines with the pliers and rotating the fuel line back and forth while pulling out on the fuel line. Keep doing this until the fuel line slides off of the fuel filter stops. Do this to both rubber fuel lines.

Step 6

Pull the old fuel filter out and discard it into the small catch container. Position the new fuel filter where the old fuel filter was, with the small arrow on the side of the fuel filter facing towards the engine. Then, push the rubber fuel lines straight onto the fuel filter ports until the fuel lines make it over the fuel line stops on the fuel filter ports. You may have to use the pliers to pull the fuel lines over the fuel line stops. Do this to both sides of the fuel filter.

Step 7

Put the metal cover back over the fuel filter and screw the three 10 mm bolts back into the cover. Tighten the bolts down tight with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and the 10 mm socket. Remove the small fluid container.

Step 8

Put the spare tire back into place in the trunk. Then, place the carpet properly in place inside of the trunk. Close the trunk.

Step 9

Screw the gas cap back onto the fuel tank. Make sure that the gas cap is screwed on completely until you can here it click. This will prevent air from entering the gas tank.

Step 10

Slowly turn the ignition key on and off three different times. This will fill the new fuel filter inside of the car back up with gas. Crank the engine on the fourth turn of the key. Let the engine run for about one minute and then turn the engine off.
