How to Remove the Headlights on an Impreza

by Matt Scheer

The Subaru Impreza features a headlight design that requires you take off other parts of the vehicle in order to remove the headlight. In some cars the headlight comes off by simply taking out a few bolts or sliding out a couple tabs. Not so with the Impreza. However, removing these other parts as well as the headlight itself shouldn't take you more than an hour because the process is actually quite straightforward and all the fasteners easy to find.

Step 1

Turn off your Impreza and prop open the hood.

Step 2

Pop off the four circular retaining clips on the bumper by wedging the flat end of a flat-head screwdriver below each clip and the bumper, and prying upward.

Step 3

Take out the three retaining pins near each front wheel well: two in the wheel well itself and one below.

Step 4

Remove the 10 retaining clips below the bumper, spread about 6 inches apart from each other.

Step 5

Pull off the bumper starting at the side near the wheel well. It is still clipped in where the bumper meets the fender, so pull it slowly and diligently. Set the bumper aside.

Step 6

Remove the four 10mm bolts from the headlight that were revealed when you removed the bumper.

Step 7

Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the headlight: one below the headlight and the other inside the engine compartment.

Step 8

Pull the headlight out with both hands.
