How to Remove the Front Bumper on a Chevrolet Avalanche

by Thomas West

The Avalanche is a truck-based vehicle made by the Chevrolet division of General Motors. Unlike a standard Chevrolet pickup truck, the bed has a built-in water-proof cover to protect its cargo from the elements. The front design of the Avalanche also differs from that of the regular Chevrolet trucks, so front bumper removal techniques are slightly different than standard models. You may need to remove the plastic front bumper if it has been damaged in a front-end collision. Certain after-market options, such as body lift kits, may also require you to remove the front bumper.

1

Remove the 10 screws (five on each side) from the front bumper at the leading edge of the front fender with a Phillips screwdriver.

2

Remove the two bracket bolts that hold the bumper to the center of the radiator shroud from underneath the front of the truck with an adjustable wrench.

3

Remove the four bumper bracket bolts (two on each side) that attach the bumper to the radiator core support mounting pads from underneath the front of the truck with an adjustable wrench.

4

Release the fog lamp wiring harness from the bumper brackets on each side by squeezing the tabs on the holding clips (two on each side) until they release. Remove the wiring harness connectors from the fog lamps (one on each side) by twisting them out in a counterclockwise direction. Push the fog lamp wiring harnesses out of the way of the bumper and bumper brackets.

5

Pull the bumper out at the leading edge of the front fender well to reveal two clips. Pry the clips out with a flat-blade screw driver. Repeat this step for the other side.

6

Face the front of the truck and remove the bumper by pushing down on the upper edge of the bumper to release the 14 clips to separate it from the grille. Use care, because the bumper is in one piece and may be heavy. Use a helper to lower the bumper from the truck if necessary.

Tips

  • Reinstall your Avalanche bumper by reversing the order of the above steps.
  • You will remove many different fasteners from your Avalanche when taking off the front bumper. Keep the fasteners in sandwich bags labeled with the location from which they were removed. This will make the installation of your bumper easier by being able to locate the correct fasteners quickly.
