How to Remove the Center Console From a 1998 Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla is a compact automobile that has been in production since 1966. According to Toyota, the Corolla is the top-selling car of all time. The 1998 Corolla came with an in-dash radio, tape deck or CD player as a feature. In order to change out the stereo and replace it with an aftermarket option, the center console needs to be removed. Corollas were built with both Torx screws and Phillips head screws as fasteners, so which tool will be needed is a coin flip. Keep both handy just in case.

Step 1

Park the Corolla on a level surface and set the parking brake.

Step 2

Pull off the plastic tips on all four of the temperature control levers. If they stick, wiggle them back and forth as you pull and they'll come free.

Step 3

Remove the screw under the AC button with either a Torx screwdriver or a Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the screw under the blue, white and red temperature lever as well.

Step 4

Grip the bottom edges of the center console with two hands and pry it loose of the fastening clips. A quick jerk should be enough to free it. Continue all the way around the edge until the console is completely free.
