Purpose of Perforated Leather Car Seats

Perforated leather car seats are distinguished by the tiny holes placed at regular intervals which add pattern and texture to the leather. These seats are often standard on luxury passenger cars, trucks, SUVs and sports cars. Perforated leather upholstery is also available as an option on higher-end models from the manufacturer as well as in the after-market.
Features
Perforated leather car seats are often designed with the leather covering the seating surfaces only, while the sides and back of the seat are covered in a matching synthetic material. True luxury models may be upholstered in 100 percent leather. Matching perforated leather may also be used on steering wheels, consoles and inside door panels.
Types
Perforated leather is available in three common types in US automobiles: The Highland perforation is used by GM and Chrysler; the Hampton perforation is used by Ford; and the Euro perforation is used by Ford and GM. The Euro perforation is directional, with wider vertical spacing of the holes.
Function
Perforated leather is often paired with temperature-adjustable seats. Even without this feature, breathable leather seats are said to be cooler in warm weather since air can flow easily through the material. Perforated leather is said to add a note of customized luxury or sportiness to the car, according to most auto dealers.
Preservation
Leather seats should be protected, by UV coated windows ideally, since they may fade when exposed to the sun. Exposure to harsh weather conditions or a lack of care can cause cracking. Avoid spills, as lighter colors may cause stains that are difficult to remove or cover.
Maintenance
Perforated leather must be cleaned with the proper solvent recommended by the manufacturer. Using the wrong leather cleaner can ruin the finish and cause the tiny perforations in the seats to clog. This will negatively affect their appearance, breathability and comfort.
Cost
Leather seats, perforated or otherwise, often add to the original purchase price of the car by a significant amount. However, the seats generally raise the potential re-sale value of a car. Protect your investment by looking for a warranty of at least 3 years or 60,000 miles, when purchasing custom seats in the after-market.
