How to Soften Stiff Leather Car Seats

Leather seats are the preferred choice for many drivers, and they are always a popular option with car buyers. Many drivers simply prefer the natural look and feel of leather, and these seats can be much more comfortable than either vinyl or cloth. However, leather seats do have a few drawbacks as the leather can stiffen over time, causing cracks and other damage. Knowing how to bring those seats back to their former suppleness can help you avoid this costly damage.
Step 1
Clean the entire surface of the seat thoroughly. Use a liquid leather cleaner available at your local auto supply store and rub the cleaner into the entire leather surface. Make sure you get down into the nooks and crannies of the seat. Allow the leather cleaner to soak into the seat for a few minutes, then use a paper towel or clean cloth to wipe away any excess.
Step 2
Dip a clean cloth in water and then in a can of saddle soap. Move the cloth around until you have a good foam then carefully work the saddle soap into the surface of the leather seats. Again, make sure you get down into all the little nooks and crannies in the seat. Focus particular attention on any areas that are dry, cracked or otherwise damaged.
Step 3
Check the color code for the seats in your car by looking at the label inside the driver's side door. Many manufacturers will list important information in this area, such as the codes for the exterior paint, the car's interior and the seats.
Step 4
Purchase a leather color restorer from your local auto supply store or online. Apply the color restorer generously to the seats and rub it in. Be sure to wipe away any excess with a paper towel or clean cloth.
Step 5
Consider using mink oil on the seats if they are dark in color. Mink oil can darken leather so it should not be used on light-colored leather car seats. A periodic application of mink oil will provide protection from water damage and make the leather softer and more supple.
