Mazda's Ford-Escape based SUV, the Tribute, has been sold since 2001. Most models come equipped with remote-keyless entry. This system works by transmitting a wireless signal between the remote and the vehicle's keyless-entry system. If you want to program a spare remote, or if you've lost your original, you can match additional remotes to the Tribute's system.

Step 1

Gather each of your remotes, including any that are already programmed. Sit down in your Tribute and close the door.

Step 2

Insert the key into the ignition module. Turn the key backward to the "Lock" position. Cycle the key between "Lock" and "Run" (position three) eight times quickly, ending in the "Run" position. The procedure must be completed within 10 seconds to be successful.

Step 3

Listen for the doors to lock and unlock, confirming the programming procedure. If they don't, remove the key and start over.

Step 4

Press any button on the keyless-entry remote. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm that the signal is received. Press any button on additional remotes, including ones that were originally programmed. Starting the programming procedure clears the stored memory.

Step 5

Turn the key backward to the "Lock" position. Leave it in this position for about 20 seconds. The doors will lock and unlock, signaling that you have exited programming mode. Turn the key to the second position ("Off") and remove it from the ignition.
