International 500 Crawler Diesel Engine Specifications
by Tim McQuadeThe International Harvester 500 was an agricultural crawler manufactured from 1965 until 1969. The 500c was a similar model produced from 1969 to 1974. Both crawlers featured a diesel or gasoline engine. Founded in 1902, International Harvester was one of the preeminent manufacturers of large agricultural and industrial equipment of the 20th century.
Engine Design
The International Harvester 500 agricultural crawler tractor featured the International Harvester BD-154 engine. This engine was a naturally-aspirated, water-cooled 154-cubic-inch four-cylinder. The engine's bore and stroke was 3.5 by 4.0 inches, and the compression ratio was 23-to-1. The engine used a 12-volt electric starter and a glow-plug pre-heating system. International Harvester manufactured the 500 crawler in its Hamilton, Ontario, Canada factory.
Engine Performance
The BD-154 had 43.5 horsepower at 2,000 rpm. The engine's power takeoff generated 36.65 horsepower at 2,000 rpm, and the power takeoff had a fuel-consumption rate of 2.6 gallons per hour. The drawbar power measured 30.55 horsepower at 2,000 rpm, and the drawbar had a fuel-consumption rate of 2.7 gallons per hour. The maximum drawbar pull was 7,957 lbs.
Fluids and Dimensions
The International Harvester 500 held 15.9 gallons of diesel fuel. The engine also held 12 quarts of coolant and 6.25 quarts of lubricating oil. The 500 crawler measured 106.5 inches in length, 60.0 inches in width and 48.8 inches in height, with a hood. The ground clearance was 13.5 inches and the wheelbase was 67.0 inches. Gross weight was 7,260 lbs.
Transmission
The 500 crawler had an International Harvester Torque Amplifier transmission with a partial power-shift, shift-on-the-move under-drive system. It had eight forward and two reverse gears. The transmission also had a 10-inch, dry disc clutch. The transmission's oil capacity was 13.2 quarts. In the top gear, the transmission gave the 500 crawler a top speed of 6.5 mph.
