How to Replace the Oil Pan Gasket in a Nissan Pathfinder. The Nissan Pathfinder is a sturdy and durable vehicle that will last for many years if properly maintained. This includes replacement of the oil pan gasket if it happens to wear out. Replacing the oil pan gasket isn't a simple task, but is more complicated on vehicles after 2000. Here's how to change the oil pan gasket on the Pathfinder models produced before 2000.

Set the gears in park and jack up the front of the Nissan Pathfinder enough to slide a jack securely underneath. Block the rear wheels to keep them stabilized while you're working.

Set a drain pan under the engine and remove the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan with a wrench. Let the old oil drain into the pan. Once the oil pan is empty, replace the drain plug.

Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the stabilizer bar, front crossmember, starter motor, transmission mount, right and left motor mounts and power steering gear.

Raise the engine for clearance if necessary and support it securely. Remove the oil pan bolts and then remove the oil pan. Scrape off the old sealer and wipe the joining surface with engine cleaner.

Apply a thin bead of liquid gasket on the oil pan joining surface and quickly replace the oil pan. If you don't have the oil pan in place within 5 minutes, you'll need to scrape off the liquid gasket and start again. Tighten the bolts securely in the reverse sequence that you removed them.

Replace the power steering gear, right and left motor mounts, transmission mount, starter motor, front crossmember, stabilizer bar and engine under cover. Reattach the negative battery cable. Jack up the front of the vehicle enough to slide out the jacks tand, lower the vehicle and remove the jack.

Allow the sealant to cure for at least 30 minutes, then add approximately 4.5 qt. of fresh oil required by a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder. Check the oil, and add more if necessary. Pour the old oil into an empty milk carton and take it to a garage or a hazardous materials disposal facility.

Tips

Check the manual for a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder to determine the proper oil pan bolt removal sequence.
