How to Change the License Plate Light Bulb on Vehicles

 How to Change the License Plate Light Bulb on a Toyota Camry

Open the trunk to the Toyota Camry. Remove the interior trunk liner from the back of the vehicle. Use a Phillips screwdriver to twist the small center screw from the middle of the plastic fastener. The screw will come up about 1/4 of an inch and then you can pry the entire fastener/plug from the predrilled hole. Remove enough fasteners to allow you to get to the license plate light assembly.

Turn the license plate light socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn to release it. They may be tight, but this is how they come out.

Extract the socket from the assembly and simply pull the light bulb from the socket.

Insert the new bulb into the socket.

Turn the lights on and check to make sure the bulb is working properly.

Insert the socket back into the assembly and turn a quarter turn clockwise until locked into place.

Reinsert the plug fasteners in the liner. Push them into the predrilled holes and push down onto the plastic screw.

Remove the screwdrivers and close the trunk.

 How to Change a License Plate Light Bulb on an Acura RSX

Determine what type of light bulb you need. This can be done by consulting the owners manual for your Acura. Alternatively, you can check with an auto parts store such as AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts.

Remove the license plate light-bulb cover. Using a small Phillips screwdriver, remove the clear gas shield from over the light bulbs. Gently unscrew the light bulb from its socket.

Compare the old and new bulbs to make sure that they are the same size and type. Insert the new bulb into the socket, and tighten it into place by turning it clockwise. Do not overtighten it. The light bulb should fit snugly in its socket, but overtightening can break the light bulb or the socket.

Replace the clear glass covers, and secure them back into position using your Phillips screwdriver.

Test the license plate bulb by turning on your nighttime lights and checking to see if the bulb that illuminates the license plate is lit.

 How to Change a License Plate Light Bulb on an Avalon

Open the trunk of your Avalon. Pull free the clips that secure the black plastic lining inside the trunk. Set the lining aside.

Unclip the sensor by pulling it straight down. Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise to remove it from the assembly. Pull the bulb out of the socket and replace it with a new bulb.

Insert the new bulb into the assembly and turn it clockwise to lock it in place. Push the sensor back into position and clip it into place.

Replace the black plastic cover and press in on the clips to lock the panel in place. Close the trunk and turn on the lights to test the new bulb.

Locate the license plate light assembly in the rear bumper, directly above the license plate. Press the assembly toward the front of the vehicle to disengage it and pull it down from the bumper.

Press the locking button on the plug on top of the light assembly and pull the plug from the assembly.

Press the locking tab on the left side of the license plate bulb lens and pull the lens upward to remove it. Grab the bulb under the lens and pull it from the assembly.

Grab a new 2825 license plate bulb with a clean, lint-free cloth and press it into the license plate light assembly. Don't touch the bulb with your bare hands, as the oil from your hands can cause premature bulb failure.

Insert the right side of the license plate light lens into the assembly, engaging the tab into the hole in the assembly. Pivot the lens until the tab on the left clicks into place.

Plug the wiring harness back into the top of the license plate assembly.

Insert the assembly in the rear bumper and press it toward the rear of the vehicle until it seats into place.

Turn off the car's ignition and make sure the headlight switch is in the "Off" position.

The bulb is located behind a lens, which is located above the license plate and held in place by two screws. Using a screwdriver, remove the screws and carefully pull the lens away from the lamp assembly.

The bulb pulls straight out from the lamp assembly. Do this gently to avoid breaking the bulb or damaging any of the assembly's parts.

Insert a new bulb by carefully pushing it into the lamp assembly. To ensure quality burn time and safety, be sure to use a bulb that is made or endorsed by Ford. Using an incorrect style could damage the wiring or assembly, or void your lamp's warranty. Following the above steps in reverse, reassemble the lens and screw it into place.
