How to Replace Transmission Mounts in a Chevy Truck

Chevy is a nickname for vehicles produced by the Chevrolet Division of General Motors. The engine and transmission in your Chevy truck are mounted to the vehicle’s frame with rubber mounts to isolate vibrations and keep them from being felt in the passenger compartment. The engine is attached with two rubber mounts, one on each side, and the transmission is attached to a cross member in the truck’s frame with a rubber mount. Over time, the transmission mount will wear, causing vibration.

Things You'll Need:

Adjustable wrench
Hydraulic floor jack
Block of wood
Replacement transmission mount

1. Crawl under the vehicle and locate the transmission mount

Crawl under the vehicle and locate the transmission mount, which is bolted to the underside of the transmission (behind the engine) and to the top of the frame cross member.

2. Remove the transmission-to-mount bolts

Remove the transmission-to-mount bolts with an adjustable wrench turned in a counterclockwise direction. Remove the cross member-to-mount bolts in the same fashion. Save the bolts for attaching the new transmission mount.

3. Place a hydraulic floor jack under the truck

Place a hydraulic floor jack under the truck. Place a block of wood on the lifting pad on the jack. Use the jack handle and raise the jack until the block of wood is resting on the underside of the transmission case just ahead of the frame cross member.

4. Slowly raise the jack so that the transmission is lifted slightly from the cross member

Slowly raise the jack so that the transmission is lifted slightly from the cross member. Slide the transmission mount out from between the transmission case and the cross member. Do not get your fingers in between the transmission case and cross member in case the jack fails.

5. Slide a new transmission mount onto the cross member

Slide a new transmission mount onto the cross member. Slowly lower the hydraulic jack, making sure the mounting holes in the metal tabs on the mount line up to the threaded holes in the transmission and the cross member.

6. Remove the jack from under the vehicle

Remove the jack from under the vehicle once the transmission is resting on the mount and cross member. Replace the bolts and tighten them with an adjustable wrench in a clockwise direction.

Tips and Warnings

Some replacement transmission mounts come with a preload plate (looks like a spacer) that must be placed in between the transmission case and the transmission mount. Check the directions that came with your transmission mount.

Before installing a new transmission mount, check the frame cross member to which the mount attaches for any signs of cracks or other damage. If your cross member is damaged, replace it. The cross member is held to the side rails of the frame with bolts that can be removed with an adjustable wrench.
