How to Get the GM Friends and Family Discount
by Lindsey ThompsonUpdated June 22, 2023Not only do General Motors employees get a discount on GM vehicles, friends and family of the employee can also take advantage of one of two savings programs. Family members of a GM employee get access to the same savings a GM employee receives. The GM Supplier Discount for Friends goes to friends of GM employees and provides the same discount GM suppliers get.
Get a Sponsorship
To use the GM family and friends discounts, you need a GM employee to sponsor you and provide you with an authorization number. The employee needs your date of birth and zip code to get you an authorization number from his online account at the GM Family First website. Once he has the authorization number, he can email it to you to print out and take to the dealership to purchase a vehicle.
Search for a Vehicle
From the GM Family First website, click on the “Build and Price” link to build a vehicle from scratch and see all eligible models. Only new and unused current year and late-year models are eligible for the discount. Once you’ve chosen a car, the website gives you the employee discount price and the supplier discount price. It also allows you to search for the nearest dealership with that vehicle. You can combine the discount with other sales and promotions GM offers at the time. GM lists all the current promotions under the “Offers” tab on the Family First website.
Visit a Dealership
Before going to the dealership to find your car, ask if it participates in the employee discount program. GM does not require all dealerships to offer the employer discounts. Let the salesperson know you will be using a family or friends discount and give her your authorization number. The salesperson will assist you with test driving the models you’re interested in, write up all the paperwork, and help you with financing if necessary. When using one of the employee discounts, you can choose any leasing program.
Qualification Requirements
The family discount is open to spouses, children, stepchildren, grandchildren, step grandchildren, siblings, parents, stepparents, grandparents and in-laws. Additionally, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and same-sex domestic partners also qualify. Eligible parties for the friends discount essentially include anyone outside your family such as friends, associates and neighbors. GM employees, retirees and surviving spouses can share the family discount, while only current and retired employees can offer the friends discount. The employee can share his employee discount with up to six family members a year.
