The amount of cargo space in a vehicle can be an important factor in deciding whether or not to buy a specific vehicle. Perhaps you go on a lot of trips with your family and you need a lot of space to store your luggage. Perhaps you travel alone and don't need a lot of space. Think about the amount of storage space you need before you buy a vehicle like the Ford Escape.

Storage Area

The 2011 Ford Escape comes with a total cargo space of 67.2 cubic feet, but this is only when the rear seats are folded down. When the rears seats are up, the total cargo space is 31.4 cubic feet. In the Ford Escape Hybrid, the total cargo volume is 66.4 cubic feet, or 30.9 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down.

Floor and Overhead Storage Consoles

Not factored into the overall cargo specifications are the storage areas within the floor, doors and overhead console area. The XLS and Hybrid 2011 Ford Escape models come with a floor console that has four cup holders and removable bins for stowing items. The XLT and Limited models have overhead cargo areas that also have storage bins, in addition to pockets on the back of each seat that allow you to store maps and magazines.

Additional Cargo Package

The Limited 2011 Ford Escape model comes with a cargo option package that includes a rooftop cargo area cover; a hidden, waterproof, locking container under the rear cargo area; and rails on the roof with crossbars to keep all of your roof-borne items secure. Although the cargo package isn't included in the other (non-Limited) Ford Escape models, you can buy it if you wish.

Weight Capacity

The cargo weight capacity of each 2011 Ford Escape model is about 4,100 pounds. Given that the gross vehicle weight of 2011 Ford Escapes is around 4,600 pounds, this cargo capacity is quite respectable for an SUV of its size. If you're looking to hitch a trailer to the Escape, the 2.5-liter engine models have a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds. The 3.0-liter engine models (including the Hybrid) have towing capacity of 3,500 pounds if you get the Class II Trailer Towing Package.
