The engine compartment of your Mitsubishi Montero may be an overwhelming place. If you aren't sure of the layout of your engine, the idea of replacing or checking any component may be daunting. If you suspect that the starter in your Montero Sport is beginning to fail, you should have it tested. The first step is to locate the starter in the engine compartment so that you can remove it for testing or check its condition.

Step 1

Open the hood and locate the air cleaner body.

Step 2

Loosen and remove the wing nut on the top of the air cleaner body. Remove the side mounting nut that secures the air cleaner to the manifold using a wrench.

Step 3

Disconnect the air intake hose from the side of the air cleaner. The hose is not secured in any way and should just slide straight off.

Step 4

Remove the two vacuum lines attached to the air cleaner. One line is in the rear, and one line is on top. They slide over the nozzles and should pull straight off.

Step 5

Lift the air cleaner off the motor. You should now have an unobstructed view down the side of the engine compartment.

Step 6

Look down the side of the motor on the driver's side of the vehicle. The starter will be located near the base of the motor, toward the back. It is a cylinder-shaped part with a smaller cylinder attached to the top of it. You will also see two wires connected to the smaller cylinder on top.
