How to Change the Drive Belt on a 2009 Toyota Corolla
by Don BowmanTo inspect the 2009 Toyota Corolla's drive belt, look for cracks in the grooves and fraying on the outside edges. Small irregularly spaced cracks are not a problem or reason for replacement. Only when the cracks are deep and continuous around the entire circumference of the belt is replacement necessary. If the belt shows evidence of fraying on the edges, look for worn or misaligned pulleys. The drive belt on a 2009 Toyota Corolla will typically last a long time.
Step 1
Loosen the 14 mm bolt at the base of the alternator using a wrench. Turn the 12 mm adjuster bolt on the top of the alternator counterclockwise with a wrench to move the alternator down toward the water pump in order to loosen the belt tension.
Step 2
Install the new belt making sure the grooves on the belt align with the grooves on the pulleys.
Step 3
Turn the adjuster bolt clockwise to move the alternator up, which will apply tension to the belt. Tighten the bolt until there is no longer freeplay in the belt between pulleys. Turn the adjuster an additional quarter turn.
Step 4
Tighten the 14 mm bolt at the base of the alternator to lock it down.
