How to Reset the "Service Engine Soon" Light on a 2002 Suburban
by Lee SallingsThe 2002 Chevy Suburban requires a scan tool to reset the "Service Engine Soon" light after repairs are made. The on-board computer in this truck monitors a variety of systems, sensors and devices in the engine and transmission. It may even turn the light on if the gas cap is loose. Low-cost scan tools are available at most auto parts stores, and the average person can reset the light in just a few minutes.
Step 1
Attach the connector on the end of the scan tool cable to the diagnostic connector. On the 2002 Suburban this connector is under the driver's side of the dash between the steering column and the center console.
Step 2
Turn the ignition key on. Press the "Read" button on the scan tool. In a few seconds the stored codes will be displayed, along with their descriptions, on the screen of the tool. Record the codes for future use during diagnostics if necessary.
Step 3
Press the "Erase" button. Answer "Yes" when the screen prompt asks if you are sure. In a few seconds the codes will be cleared and the "Service Engine Soon" light will be reset. Turn off the ignition key and unplug the scan tool.
