How to Replace a Toyota Camry Battery Cable

When your Toyota Camry doesn't start and you have tried jump starting and charging the battery, it is usually safe to say the connections to the battery are faulty. Replacing a battery cable is sometimes necessary in order to establish a quality connection between your car's battery and starter or the battery and ground. Follow these steps to replace your Toyota Camry's battery cables for a quality connection and to get your car running again.

Step 1

Find the year of your Toyota Camry in the car's owners manual or on a recent car insurance slip. Go to your local auto repair store. Give the store clerk the year, make and model of your car and tell them you need to purchase a new positive and negative battery cable for your vehicle.

Step 2

Take the keys out of your ignition and reach down under your dashboard on the driver's side and pop the car hood.

Step 3

Find the battery under the hood. In a Toyota Camry, it is located on the driver's side just behind the headlight.

Step 4

Remove the red positive cable and black negative cable connectors from the battery terminals with a pliers or wrench.

Step 5

Grab the disconnected black cable and run your hand along it until you get to its other end. The black negative cable is connected to the frame of your car with a single nut. Use the proper size wrench to unscrew the nut. Put the nut in a safe spot and pull the black negative battery cable out from under your hood.

Step 6

Grab the disconnected red cable and run your hand along it until you get to its other end. The red positive cable is connected to the vehicles starter with a single nut. Use the proper size wrench to unscrew the nut. Put the nut in a safe spot and pull the red positive battery cable out from under your hood.

Step 7

Take the new red positive battery cable out of the package. Position the flat eyelet end of the new red positive cable onto the cars starters bolt, where the old cable used to be attached, and re-screw the nut into place.

Step 8

Take the new black negative battery cable out of the package. Position the flat eyelet end of the new black negative cable over the cars grounding frame bolt, where the old cable used to be attached. Re-screw the nut into place.

Step 9

Reattach the new red positive battery cable to the positive terminal of the battery and tighten it with a pliers or wrench. Reattach the new black negative battery cable to the negative terminal of the battery and tighten it with a pliers or wrench. Shut the hood.
