How to Replace a Land Cruiser Antenna Mast

Replacing the antenna mast of the Toyota Land Cruiser is a job that can be done in about an hour or two. The antenna mast can be replaced without needing to replace the motor assembly as well. The antenna mast cable winds around the gear shaft inside the motor assembly, allowing you to replace the entire antenna mast with a new unit. You can save even more money by replacing the antenna mast yourself.

Step 1

Unfasten the negative battery cable of the Toyota Land Cruiser from the battery post with an open-end wrench. Turn the antenna base mast nut on the front passenger side of the vehicle counterclockwise with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Lift the mast nut off the antenna mast.

Step 2

Pull the antenna straight up out of the power antenna motor to remove the antenna and cable from the assembly. Locate the black cruise control servo on the passenger side of the engine compartment under the antenna mast and take the cover off the servo to find the bracket.

Step 3

Unfasten the three bolts that secure the cruise control bracket to the vehicle frame with a socket wrench. Move the cruise control out of the way and detach the bolt that fastens the fuel pump resistor to the fender with the socket wrench.

Step 4

Set the resistor off to the side and remove the lower mounting bolt of the antenna with the socket wrench. Maneuver the antenna motor assembly until you can see the four Phillips-head self-tapping screws that secure the cover plate to the antenna motor and remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Step 5

Take the cover plate off the motor assembly and move the electric ground wires back so you can access the cable spool. Remove the spool from the antenna mast motor housing and discard any remaining cable pieces.

Step 6

Wipe any old grease off the spool with a clean cloth and feed the cable of the new antenna mast through the top of the motor assembly. Wind the cable around the spool, counterclockwise and place the spool back inside the motor assembly.

Step 7

Move the ground wires back in place and attach the cover plate to the motor assembly. Place the antenna mast motor assembly back against the fender and secure the assembly with the bolt.

Step 8

Attach the fuel pump resistor to the fender with a bolt and move the cruise control servo bracket back in place. Fasten the bracket with three bolts and attach the cover to the cruise control servo.

Step 9

Secure the antenna base mast nut onto the fender of the Toyota Land Cruiser with the needle-nose pliers. Fasten the negative battery cable to the battery post.
