How to Install a Cam Positioning Sensor in 4.0 V6 Ford

The cam position sensor on a Ford 4.0 V6 is located on the dipstick side of the engine in the forward part of the block. The computer uses the camshaft sensor to determine the firing of the fuel injectors at the appropriate valve timing. The cam sensor is a hall-effect device composed of a magnet and revolving pole piece. As the pole piece passes close to the magnet, an electrical pulse is produced, which is read by the computer as a location of the cam relative to the valve opening.

Open the hood and look for the sensor on the dipstick side of the block. It will be in the front side of the block, directly under the cylinder head. It will be held in with a singular 10mm bolt. Disconnect the electrical connector on the sensor by simply pulling it off.

Remove the 10mm bolt in the bracket on top of the sensor securing it to the block.

Twist the bracket and lift the sensor out of the block.

Install the sensor and secure it in reverse order of removal.


  • When the cam positioning sensor goes bad, it sets a code. Clear the code using a code reader, available at most big box auto parts stores.
