How to Disable an Alarm in Vehicles

by Contributing Writer; Updated June 12, 2017

In order to disable the alarm from your Vehicles you will need one of three things: your Vehicles remote control, your Vehicles ignition key, or a fuse puller. The alarm can be disabled through the remote control, by fully locking and unlocking the Vehicles ignition, or by removing the alarm fuse from the engine compartment fuse panel. Be sure to not leave your alarm disabled Vehicles an extended period of time, as this can make your Vehicles more vulnerable to theft.

How to Disable the Alarm on a 1997 Corolla

Find the override button or toggle. The 1997 Toyota Corolla's factory alarm has a toggle switch instead of a button. However, if you have an after-market alarm it could be a button rather than a toggle. Typically the override -- which is either black or red -- is located under the dashboard, close to knee level when you sit in the driver's seat.

Override the system. Simply start the car, then push and flip the switch in the opposite direction. The alarm should chirp once. If you have an override button, start the car, then press and hold in the button until the alarm chirps. The LED light on the dash should stay on, instead of blinking on and off.

Reset the alarm. If you have your key fob, follow the procedure again to reset the alarm. If you lost your key fob, purchase a new one from a Toyota dealer and have the technician sync the alarm with your new key fob.

Insert the key into the door lock and turn it counterclockwise. This will turn the alarm off if it is currently sounding.

Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal by using a wrench to loosen the nut on the cable. Tuck the cable behind something so that it will not spring back into contact with the battery.

Remove the driver's side kick panel. Work a prying tool such as a flathead screwdriver around the perimeter of the panel until it is free to come off. Do not use force to remove the panel. A half-purple, half-yellow wire will now be exposed. This is the disarm wire for the alarm system.

Strip away a section of the wire with wire strippers. Do not cut the wire. Strip both ends of a spare length of any type of electrical wire. Wrap one end of the wire around the newly-exposed section of the alarm wire.

Find any metal bolt close to the wire and slightly loosen it. This will serve as a ground point. Wrap the other end of the wire around the bolt and tighten it back into place. The alarm is now disabled.

Replace the negative battery cable, ensuring the nut is securely tightened.
