How to Change Headlight Bulbs for the Ford Cars

The Ford car is a crossover SUV offered by Mitsubishi. The Ford car headlights, like those in virtually any consumer automobile, are subject to fail. When a filament in your Ford car headlight bulb breaks, you'll need to replace the bulb as soon as possible. Failure to replace a failed bulb immediately will impair your nighttime driving and could cause a car accident or get you a ticket Ford car improper equipment. Replacement headlight bulbs are available from auto parts retailers. However, each aftermarket bulb manufacturer uses a different part number.  How to Change Headlight Bulbs for the 2003 Ford Escape

Turn off the headlights and remove the Escape's key from the ignition. Open the hood.

Reach behind the headlamp and squeeze the two tabs on the headlight wiring connector inward. Pull the connector straight back to remove it from the bulb.

Pull the rubber insulator boot off the lamp assembly by pulling on one of the side tabs. Press the ends of the retainer ring together and then push the ring forward to clear the hooks. Swivel the ring out of the way.

Pull the old headlight bulb straight back out of the headlamp assembly. Align the tabs in the bulb with the slots in the headlamp assembly and insert the new HB2 bulb into the headlamp assembly without touching the glass portion of the new bulb with your bare skin. Skin oils can boil on the glass when you turn on the head lights, causing micro-fractures in the glass, which leads to immediate bulb failure.

Swivel the retaining spring back into place. Compress the spring's ends and push them in, then release them so they catch on their retaining hooks.

Place the rubber insulator boot back onto the back of the headlight assembly. Push down on the perimeter of the boot to make sure it seals properly all the way around.

Plug the electrical connector into the new bulb. Push in on the connector until it snaps into place. Close the hood.

 How to Replace Headlight Bulbs on a Endeavor

Open the hood of your Endeavor and unplug the electrical connector from the back of the headlight.

Pull the protective cover off the back of the headlight housing assembly.

Turn the headlight bulb counterclockwise to unlock it from the housing assembly and pull it out of the housing.

Insert a new bulb into the headlight housing assembly and turn it clockwise to lock it into the housing.

Replace the housing cover and plug in the electrical connector.

Turn on the Endeavor's headlight s to make sure the new bulb works, and close the hood.

 How to Change the Headlight Bulb on the 2004 Ford F150

Turn off the engine and remove the keys from your 2004 Ford F-150. Give the truck time to cool down as to avoid injury due to a hot surface. Directly to the left of the steering column there is a large switch with a picture of a hood opening that needs to be pulled in order to unlock the front hood. Pull this switch and move to the front of the car. Underneath the hood there is a second switch that needs to be pulled up towards you then to the right. After doing this, the hood will unlock and you will be able to pull up and prop the hood open.

Find the headlight that you wish to replace. Above the main headlight assembly there will be a series of four bolts. In the middle of these four bolts there is a small plastic insert that you must pull out to loosen the outer lens of the headlight assembly. Remove the outer lens and place aside.

Unscrew the damaged headlight bulb and place aside. Replace the broken bulb with the new H13 or H14 bulb. Re-attach the outer lens cover and push the plastic insert back in place, locking the headlight assembly. To make sure you correctly replaced the headlight, turn on the headlights multiple times and make sure that you performed the tasks correctly.

 How to Replace the Headlight Bulb of a Ford Expedition

Shut off the Expedition and turn the headlight switch to the "off" position.

Raise the hood and unbolt the headlamp retaining fasteners, located at the top of the headlamp assembly, using the socket set.

Loosen the vertical bolt located at the back of the headlamp assembly, but do not remove it.

Pull the headlamp assembly forward, by hand, until you can access the rear of it easily.

Pull the headlight bulb socket covers off by hand (if your Expedition has socket covers).

Turn the headlight bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it out of the headlamp assembly. Pull the old bulb out by hand and insert the replacement bulb. Do not touch the glass portion of the replacement bulb with your bare skin.

Reinsert the socket and bulb into the headlamp assembly, align the retaining tabs with the retaining tab slots and turn the socket clockwise until it clicks into place. Reinstall the socket covers, if so equipped.

Push the headlamp assembly back into position and reinstall the two upper retaining fasteners by hand. Tighten those two and the vertical bolt with the socket set. Close the hood and test the headlights before driving the Expedition.

 How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in a Ford Focus

Ensure that the headlights on your Ford Focus are off by checking you have turned the headlight control all the way to the off position. Make sure your car is off and the keys are out of the ignition, so the daytime lamps are also off.

Open the hood using the hood release handle located inside the vehicle under the steering wheel on the left side of the instrument panel. Walk around to the front of your Ford Focus and release the auxiliary latch located under the front of the hood. Lift the hood and secure it in place with the yellow end of the hood's strut in the designated holes.

Locate the bulb cover found just behind the headlight assembly and remove it by turning it counterclockwise. Swivel the wire clip that hold the bulb and connector in place out of the way by turning it to the left.

Pull out the headlight bulb with its electrical connector straight out from the headlamp assembly.

Disconnect the bulb from the connector. Later editions of the Ford Focus may have a retaining ring that lies between the bulb and electrical connector. Simply remove this retaining ring by twisting it off with a counterclockwise turn.

Install the replacement headlight bulb in reverse order of removal. Use a HB2 replacement bulb for models older than 2004 and a HB5 bulb for models produced since 2005. Replace the wire clip and bulb cover, as well.

Turn on your Ford Focus and check that the headlights are working properly after closing the hood.

 How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in a Ford F-Series

Set the parking brake, remove the keys from the ignition and make sure to switch the headlights to "OFF" before replacing the headlight bulb.

Open the hood by first pulling up on the interior release latch located at the bottom of the instrument panel on the driver's side. Walk around to the front of the truck to release the latch located under the hood at the front center. You don't have to suppport the hood with a rod, as the cylinders should engage and hold the hood open.

Disengage the headlight assembly from the vehicle, so you can expose the bulb and electrical connectors. For 2003 and earlier models, release the retaining clips at the back of the headlamp by pulling them rearward and up about 3/4 of an inch. You may want to use a pair of pliers if the clips are difficult to move.

Remove three screws to release the headlight assembly in models later than 2004. Take off the protective cover and unscrew the screws located near the top inboard of the assembly. Lift up on the tab at the top center of the assembly to disengage.

Pull the headlight assembly out from the front of the vehicle. For 2003 and earlier models, slide the assembly forward off the guide ribs. For 2004 and later models, slide the assembly forward, disconnecting the snap attachment at the fender.

Free the bulb assembly by pulling the electrical connector straight out and rearward. For 2003 and earlier models, turn the bulb retaining ring counterclockwise and sliding it off the bulb's plastic base. Don't turn or twist on the old bulb, just pull straight out on the bulb to remove it.

Install the new bulb. Looking at the pastic base of the bulb, align the grooves with the tabs in the lamp assembly. Put the retaining ring back on, if applicable, and push the electrical connector back in until it snaps into place.

Replace the headlight assembly in reverse order of removal. If yours is a 2003 or earlier model, straighten the alignment pins with the outer edges of the attachment standoff so they'll insert into the right holes back on the front of the truck. Also, pay special attention to the guide ribs as you push down on the headlight assembly, until it snaps back into place.

Check that the headlights are working properly in your Ford F-Series and close the hood.

 How to Replace a Headlight Bulb on a 2005 F150 Pickup

Make sure the headlights are turned off. Open the hood to access the headlight assembly.

Access the rear of the headlight assembly and peel back the protective cover from the rear.

Remove the three screws that become visible with the protective cover removed. There is one screw on top and two on the side.

Lift up the center tab to detach the headlight assembly from the truck. Slide the headlight assembly forward.

Pull the electrical connector from the bulb module, and then turn the bulb counterclockwise to release it.

Remove the burnt bulb and install the new bulb. Make sure the new bulb snaps into the module.

Push the headlight assembly back in place and connect the electrical connection. Push the center tab down to secure it. Replace the three screws and the protective cover.

 How to Replace the Headlight Bulb in a Ford Windstar

Turn the headlight switch to the “OFF” position. Pull the hood release located in the area of the driver's-side kick panel. Slide the release handle, located under the front center of the hood, to the right. Lift the hood and support it with the prop rod.

Locate the two retaining pins on top of the headlight assembly you wish to remove. Lift the pins upward and place them aside.

Pull the headlight assembly straight out of the headlight mounting bracket, being careful not to damage the wiring still attached to the rear of the assembly.

Pull the wiring connector from the back of the headlight assembly while rotating the bulb retaining ring in a counterclockwise direction. Now pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp assembly and discard it.

Grasp a new 9007 bulb by its plastic base and insert it into the hole in the rear of the headlight assembly until it is fully seated.

Push the wiring connector back into the rear of the headlight bulb that is protruding from the headlight assembly until it is fully seated. Rotate the retaining ring in a clockwise direction until it locks into place.

Push the headlight assembly back into the headlight mounting bracket. Push the two retaining pins back into the top of the headlight assembly until they are fully seated. Lower the prop rod and close the hood.

 How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in a Ford Explorer

Turn off your Ford Explorer and remove the keys from the ignition. Engage the parking brake before attempting any repairs. Double-check that the headlight control switch is off.

Open the hood by locating the interior release handle located at the bottom left under the instrument panel. Pull the lever up and towards the rear of the vehicle. Walk to the front of the vehicle and release the secondary hood latch located at the front center of the hood. Raise the hood.

Locate the two retaining pins at the back of the headlight assembly and pry them up until you can remove them. You should be able to do this with your hands, but you may use a screwdriver or pliers, if you encounter some difficulty. The pins should pull straight up and out, releasing the headlight assembly from the Ford Explorer.

Pull the headlight assembly out and away from the front of the vehicle. Disconnect the electrical connector from the bulb assembly by pushing the center tab on the connector and pulling downward.

Remove the burnt-out bulb by turning it counterclockwise until it unlocks and then pulling it straight out from the bulb assembly.

Align the plastic grooves in the new bulb with the tabs in the bulb assembly and push it straight in to install the new bulb. Give the bulb a clockwise turn to lock it into place. Reinstall the electrical connector and headlight assembly in reverse order of removal to complete the installation process.

Turn on your Ford Explorer to test that the new headlight bulb is working properly.

 How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in a Ford Taurus

Turn off your Ford Taurus, engage the parking brake and remove the keys from the ignition before beginning any repairs. Ensure that the headlights are off by double-checking you turned the interior control completely to the off position.

Raise the hood by first pulling up on the interior hood release latch located under the instrument panel on the left of the steering column. Walk around to the front of the car and release the auxiliary latch located at the front center of the hood. Raise the hood until the lift cylinders catch and hold the hood open on its own.

Unscrew the bolt from the headlamp assembly by turning it counterclockwise. Use a screwdriver or pliers to pry up the retaining pins enough that you can pull them straight up and out with either your hands or a pair of pliers. These pins are located at the back of the headlight assembly.

Pull the headlight assembly out from the front of the vehicle. Remove the protective dust shield from the electrical connector and bulb assembly by turning it counterclockwise and pulling it off.

Free the bulb assembly by disconnecting the electrical connector and retaining ring. You can simply pull off the connector to remove it. The retaining ring requires a counterclockwise turn for removal.

Take out the old headlight bulb by pulling it straight out from the headlight assembly.

Install a new replacement bulb by pushing it straight in with the flat part of the bulb's base facing upward. Be sure that the grooves in the plastic base of the bulb align properly with those in the headlight assembly.

Reinstall the remaining components of the headlight assembly in reverse order of removal and check that the headlights are working properly.

 How to Replace the Headlight Bulb in a 2007 Ford Focus

Open the hood of your Ford Focus and locate the headlight assembly. Locate the large cap on the rear of the headlight assembly and pull it off. Set the cap aside in a safe place for use later.

Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the rear of the headlight bulb by lifting the locking tab, being careful not to break it off. Pull the connector off the back of the bulb. Pull on the connector body only--not the wires--or damage will occur to the wires.

Turn the bulb retainer ring on the back of the assembly counterclockwise, then remove the ring and slide the bulb out of the headlight assembly. Discard the old bulb and insert a new HB5 bulb into the assembly. Do not handle the glass portion of the bulb with your hands. The oils from your hand will cause the bulb to overheat and shatter.

Install the headlight bulb locking ring over the back of the bulb and turn it clockwise until it locks in place. Install the wiring harness connector onto the rear of the bulb, pushing it on until the locking tab engages the pin on the body of the bulb.

Push the bulb cap onto the headlight assembly to keep the water and dirt out of the assembly. Move to the opposite headlight and repeat the process to change the second bulb.

Test the headlights by turning on the headlight switch and visually verifying that the headlights are working on both high and low beam.
