How do I Program a Remote Keyless Entry for Chevrolet Carsby Contributing Writer; Updated June 12, 2017
A remote, keyless-entry system transmitter or RKE transmitter controls the keyless entry system on your Chevrolet car. The device is programmed to an individual Chevrolet car using a set procedures utilizing the Chevrolet car driver information center located the near the instrument panel. This simplifies the programming method while at the same time prevents theft. You cannot access the driver information center without turning the Chevrolet car on, and this can't be done unless you have the ignition key.

Purchase a keyless entry unit from a Chevrolet dealership (see Resources) or another retailer. These are available from online retailers.
Take your unit to a dealership or automotive locksmith for programming.
Wait while the dealer or locksmith programs the unit with a TECH II scan tool.
Insert the key in the ignition and turn the key to the "acc" or "on" position. Turn the car radio off by pressing the "POWER" button. Press and hold the "DISP" button on the radio for approximately 5 seconds until "SETTINGS" is displayed on the LCD screen. Press the "SEEK UP" button on the radio until "FOB PROG" is displayed on the LCD screen.
Press the "NEXT" button on the radio to access the programming submenu. The first option displayed in the submenu will be BEGIN. Press the "DISP" button on the radio with the BEGIN option chosen to enter remote programming mode, at which time the words "PUSH FOB" will flash on the LCD screen.
Press and hold the "lock" and "unlock" buttons simultaneously on the remote to be programmed for 15 seconds. A chime will sound, indicating that the remote was programmed successfully. Repeat for additional remotes that need programming. A total of four remotes can be programmed for the vehicle.
Exit remote programming mode by pressing the "SEEK UP" button on the radio until "EXIT" is displayed on the LCD screen. Press the "DISP" button on the radio and wait for a chime to sound, indicating that programming is complete. Test each remote by using it to cycle the power door locks of the vehicle.
Gather your car key and the keyless-entry remote you want to program to the Suburban. Only a factory-replacement remote will synchronize with the system.
Verify that all of the doors are closed, including the rear-hatch door. Open the driver's door, take a seat and close the door.
Place the key in the ignition, but do not turn it. Press and hold the "Unlock" switch on your door's master-control panel.
Turn the ignition in the following sequence: on, off, on, off. When turning the key to "On," do not start the engine. Perform this rapidly for success.
Release the "Unlock" switch. You'll hear the doors lock. If you don't, start the procedure over.
Simultaneously press "Lock" and "Unlock" on the keyless-entry remote. Hold these buttons down for about 30 seconds. You'll hear the door locks cycle again. This lets you know the remote is programmed. Turn the ignition to "On," then "Off" to finish.

Find the C/K1500's diagnostic port under the steering wheel. The port is on the left side of the dash beneath the steering wheel, and it has 16 small holes.
Count to the fourth hole, starting from the left of the top row. Insert one side of your jumper wire firmly into the hole.
Insert the other end of the jumper wire into the eighth hole on the top row. This is the last hole on the right. Your truck's door locks will go through the lock/unlock cycle.
Press and hold the "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons on the remote at the same time. Continue holding the buttons until the door locks go through their cycle again. This should take 15 to 20 seconds.
Press and hold the same buttons on a different remote if you are programming more than one. Take the jumper wire out of the diagnostic port when you are finished.

Collect all remote keyless entry devices you wish to program. Purchase remotes on eBay, from a Chevy dealership or online if you need additional or replacement devices. Check that the remotes you purchase have matching styles in terms of number of buttons, the number (1, 2, 3 or 4) shown on the back, and whether there is a red horn button.
Remove the key from the ignition. Open the front passenger door and remove the BCMPRGM fuse. The fuse panel legend shows which fuse this is.
Close the doors, lift the gate and put the key in the ignition, then turn the ignition lock cylinder once toward you; not in the direction to start the engine. This puts the ignition lock cylinder in the ACC position. Quickly turn the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position and then back to the ACC position. Do this turn in about one second.
Open and close a door; the driver's door is probably the easiest. A chime sounds denoting the system is in the programmable mode. Press and hold "Lock" and "Unlock" on the device at the same time for 14 seconds total or until you hear two chimes confirming successful programming. This erases all other remote codes and you now need to program any other keyless Chevy remotes you wish to use for this vehicle using the same steps.
Remove the key from the ignition lock cylinder once programming is completely finished and reinstall the BCMPRGM fuse.
