How to Disable the Silverado Airbag
by Kyle SanstromChevrolet Silverado pickup trucks come equipped with an airbag "ON-OFF" key switch that allows the driver to selectively disable the passenger airbag. When a child seat or a smaller occupant needs be in the front passenger seat, the airbag must be disabled to ensure their safety. When the airbag is disabled, a warning light will illuminate near the key switch, alerting the driver that the airbag is no longer activated. The ignition key is required to actuate this switch and disable the airbag.
Step 1
Turn off the engine and take the key out of the ignition. Place the transmission in park and apply the parking brake.
Step 2
Insert the key into the passenger airbag "ON/OFF" switch. Turn the key to the "OFF" position and remove the key from the switch.
Step 3
Start the vehicle and verify that the "airbag OFF" light near the switch is illuminated.
