How to Find a Car's Owner by VIN Number

However, finding out the owner of your old car can be tricky. Luckily, there are many vehicle history report websites that allow the user to search for a vehicle's history with the vehicle identification number, more commonly referred to as a VIN. The VIN can tell you practically anything about the car, including color, year, make and model. The registered owner is also tied to the vehicle, so looking up the VIN can reveal the history of ownership, which includes the present owner.
Step 1
Open you preferred web browser, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer and navigate to your preferred search engine, such as Google or MSN.
Step 2
Search for "vehicle history report" in the search engine. You'll get a long list of vehicle history report websites. CARFAX is the most popular website, along with others websites such as Autocheck.com or Is-it-a-lemon.com.
Step 3
Choose the website you'd like to perform your vehicle history report search.
Step 4
Create an account. In order to obtain your vehicle history report, you'll have to create an account and pay a fee. Vehicle history report websites are not free despite many advertisements claiming the opposite.
Step 5
Enter the VIN of the vehicle for which you'd like to obtain a history report. The website will either send you an email with vehicle history report or they'll display the results on the website under your account.
