How to Get a Car Key Made for a Lexus

by Melody Dawn

The Lexus key fob contains a specially programmed chip that will work for only your vehicle. You must have your programmed key in the ignition for your car to start. A regular key will not work. According to Lexus, your key communicates electronically with your car's anti-theft system to provide added security and reduce your risk of auto theft. A locksmith will not be able to assist you unless he has a programmable key. Only a certified locksmith can provide this service.

Step 1

Find a certified locksmith in your area to help you. The locksmith can provide a duplicate key. Going to a locksmith is typically cheaper than ordering a new key from the dealership.

Step 2

Contact a Lexus dealership and ask for the service department. You can find the closest dealer by going online to the official Lexus website and entering your zip code in the top left-hand side of the page. You can also contact Lexus at 1-800-255-3987 and select option 3.

Step 3

Ask the Lexus representative to order a replacement key for your vehicle. The representative will take down your personal information, including the year, make and model of your vehicle. The replacement key will be shipped to your local dealership.

Step 4

Visit the dealership when the key comes in. The service department will need to program the key to your vehicle by entering your car's serial number.
