How to Tune Up an LT1 Engineby Matt Wooddy
Chevrolet introduced the LT1 small-block V8 to consumers in 1992. Equipped in the all new Chevrolet Corvette, the LT1 improved on its predecessor, the L98 motor, by increasing the compression ratio and greater spark response. In turn, this upped the performance output to advertise 300 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 340 horsepower at 4,000 rpm. After 1992, the LT1 engine saw more applications into vehicles, broadening its appeal to consumers and enthusiasts. An important aspect to keeping this engine running at peak performance is regularly tuning and servicing its core components.
Air Intake System
Use the necessary wrench to loosen the bolts that hold the air filter casing together. The air intake is an important part of the LT1 engine and how it performs, so maintaining a clean system on a regular basis will ensure proper air flow.
Open the air filter case to access the filter inside. Undo the fasteners that hold the filter firmly in place.
Lift the air filter out of the case slowly, as to not spill dirt and debris onto the engine.
Clean any dust and debris that is in or around the air intake system thoroughly.
Install the new air filter in place of the old one, using the same bolts and fasteners to secure. Close the air filter case and make sure everything is secure.
Use the spark plug wire puller to remove the wires from each spark plug. Pull on the wires from the boot access point.
Inspect the individual spark plugs and determine whether or not they show obvious signs of damage, corrosion, moisture or any other signs of rough wear.
Remove the bad spark plugs from the engine. Use the necessary wrench and turn it counterclockwise.
Inspect the spark plug wires that are attached to the spark coil. Remove any wires that seem damaged or worn.
Replace the old wires with new wires. Reattach all of the ignition wires to the respective spark plugs.
Oil and Oil Filter
Use the jack to lift your vehicle . Hold car's front end up with jack stands.
Position the oil recycle container underneath the oil pan. This will catch all of the oil runoff and ease the recycling.
Unplug the pan and drain all of the old oil out of the engine's oil compartment. Replace the plug once finished.
Use the necessary wrench and remove the old oil filter. Turn the wrench counterclockwise.
Fill the new oil filter 2/3 full of oil and hand-screw into place. Add ¾ oil to the engine's oil compartment. Monitor the levels with the dipstick. Add oil as needed.
