The Fluid Specifications of John Deere 4X2 Trail Gators
Fluid Capacities
The 4 x 2 Trail Gator holds 1.67 quarts of engine oil and 4.8 quarts of transaxle oil.
Fluid Service Schedule
John Deere recommends changing the engine oil after the first 20 hours of operation and every 50 hours of operation thereafter. Transaxle oil should be changed every 800 hours or 24 months, whichever comes first. Frequent operation in dusty or muddy trail environments makes observance of the fluid change schedule essential. In an air-cooled model such as the Gator 4 x 2, engine and transaxle oils play an important role in cooling as well as lubrication.
Engine Oil Specifications
The preferred engine oil for use in the 4 x 2 Trail Gator is John Deere Plus-4 SAE 10W-40 when anticipated operating temperatures are above 4 F. For operation in temperatures to -22 F, the preferred engine oil is John Deere Torq-Gard Supreme SAE 5W-30. John Deere states that other major name brands of oil in the above viscosities are acceptable provided they meet or exceed API Service Classifications SG.
Synthetic oils such as John Deere Plus-50 or other major brand-name equivalents, are also John Deere recommendations as long as they are appropriate to the anticipated operating temperature range. The manufacturer does not advise mixing different brands or viscosities. A full crankcase drain is recommended before switching to other brands or viscosities or when making a transition from conventional oil to synthetic.
Transaxle Oil Specifications
John Deere low viscosity Hy-Gard J20D is recommended for use in the Trail Gator transaxle. The manufacturer specifically advises against the use of engine oil or automatic transmission fluid as less-expensive substitutes in this transaxle.
An industry-wide standard for hydraulic/transmission tractor oils does not exist and John Deere notes in technical bulletins that the company does not evaluate competitive brands. However, the Gator 4 x 2 owner's manual states that you may substitute other transaxle hydraulic oils where John Deere J20D is not available, as long as they meet J20D specifications. Shell's Donax TD Low Viscosity Universal Tractor Fluid is a widely available brand which has published specifications equivalent to Hy-Gard J20D.
Fluid Specifications for a Yamaha 660
Gasoline
The Grizzly 660 takes gasoline as its main fuel source. Yamaha instructs owners to use only unleaded gasoline in this quad, warning that leaded gasoline will cause severe damage to piston rings, valves and the exhaust system. Unleaded gas with a research octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. Gasohol may also be used if the ethanol or methanol does not constitute more than 10 percent of the fuel. The Grizzly 660 can fit 5.28 gallons of gas in its tank, with 0.92 gallons in the reserve.
Engine Oil
Yamaha recommends that riders check engine oil levels prior to each ride. Four different types of engine oil work most efficiently in the Grizzly 660: YamaLube4, SAE5W30, SAE10W30 or SAE20W40. Still, any API service SG or higher type of engine oil may be used. The Grizzly 660 has an engine oil capacity of 2.01 quarts.
Gear Oil
Yamaha recommends SAE80 API GL-4 Hypoid oil for both the final gear oil and the differential gear oil. The Grizzly 660 has a final gear oil capacity of 0.26 quarts and a differential oil capacity of 0.30 quarts.
Fluid Specifications for a BMW Z3M Roadster
Engine and Transmission
The 2002 BMW Z3 M V-6 engine requires 5.3 quarts of motor oil. The recommended grade is 10W-60 motor oil. The five-speed manual transmission requires 3.6 pints of transmission fluid.
Other Fluids
The Z3 M requires 9.9 quarts of coolant and 2.6 pints of fluid for the rear differential. Severe Gear 75W-140 fluid is required for the limited slip differential. Severe Gear 75W-90 fluid is required for the standard differential, according to AMS Oil.
Fuel Economy
Fuel economy for this two-passenger rear-wheel-drive roadster is 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, according to The Car Connection. This car requires premium gasoline.
