How to Reset the Oil Indicator on a Chevrolet Equinox
by Justin CuplerAll General Motors vehicles produced since 2000 have an oil life system that alerts the driver when an oil change is due, with a light in the instrument cluster. The vehicle's computer determines the proper mileage between oil changes by gathering information from the sensors throughout the vehicle. The computer will shorten the time between oil changes if severe driving is detected or lengthen the interval if light driving is detected. This light must be reset after each oil change, so the computer knows to start gathering new information and set a new interval.
Step 1
Insert the key into the ignition.
Step 2
Turn the key to the run position, but do not start the vehicle.
Step 3
Press and release the gas pedal three times within three seconds of turning the key.
Step 4
Observe as the oil change light begins to flash.
Step 5
Turn the key to the lock position once the light has stopped flashing.
Step 6
Start the vehicle to make certain the light has turned off. Repeat the procedure if the light remains.
