How to Replace the Cables on the Back Door of My Ford Econoline Van

by Daniel Valladares

If the back on your Ford Econoline van refuses to open, the issue may be with the cables that operate the door lock and handle mechanism. Replacing the cables is a fairly simple task, as they are held in place through a series of screws. Once the screws are removed with a Phillips screwdriver, you can remove and replace the cables. The entire process takes only a few minutes.

Remove the access cover from the inboard side of the van's rear door by removing the four cover screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

Remove the door latch screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Use a slotted screwdriver to disconnect the cables from the latch.

Detach the nuts from the cables and pull the cables out of the van. Install the replacement cables and reattach the nuts.

Reinstall the door latch and its screws. Reattach the access cover and reinstall its four screws.
